  • What’s the process to get the green light to build to our area?
    As we intend to install new fibre to provide our gigabit broadband infrastructure, we have to be wary of the economics of the fibre build, especially in rural areas. Hence, it is really important we get the sign-ups we need, in order to execute our build plan knowing there is sufficient interest from the community. We need at least 30% of households per area to pre-register, in order for that community to be considered and the green light given to commence the build. So much work goes into building a brand new network infrastructure, so we’ve broken this down into stages and explain here why each is so important.
  • Why is Registering Important?
    Registering your interest is vitally important because it allows us to identify where there’s a greater demand for gigabit broadband. The more interest in a particular area, the more likely we’ll be able to build the network in that area. Please note that registration is free and there is absolutely no obligation at this stage. We’re continually monitoring interest in areas, so we’ll let you know when your location is ready to take the next step and enter the ‘Sign Up’ stage. If you want to speed up this process and really get your community on the map, you can help drive it by becoming one of our Gigabit Champions.
  • What is the Role of The Gigabit Champion?
    By speaking to friends and neighbours and encouraging them to pre-register, our Gigabit champions can help accelerate their community up the leaderboard, speeding up the process. We can then work on bringing you the gigabit broadband speeds you deserve. Champions are members of a community who become an extended part of the Grayshott Gigabit Team. Working hand in hand with our Customer Success team, Champions are instrumental in spreading the word about Grayshott Gigabit. Passionate about bringing gigabit broadband to their own community, they’re equipped with all the collateral, support and knowledge needed to help others place their orders. This voluntary role of Gigabit Champion can include any or all of the following: Speaking with friends & neighbours Putting posters up on local notice boards Delivering flyers to households Working alongside local parish councils Posting updates to village websites / local social networking pages Attending Community Meetings Advising the Grayshott Gigabit team of any particular issues in your area We’ll support you with all the equipment needed to make a real difference in your community and will always be here to answer any questions you might need help with. If there are other initiatives that we can utilise to support our Gigabit Champions, we would be keen to hear thoughts and views on what is best for each community.
  • How do I become a Gigabit Champion?
    If you are interested in becoming a Gigabit Champion, please email expressing your interest to us at info@grayshottgigabit.com. A member of the Grayshott Gigabit team will then contact you to discuss the next steps. Note, we have found that for many parishes & villages, more than one Gigabit Champion is needed to share the load and work in catchment areas to get the community excited?
  • How will Grayshott Gigabit help?

  • What happens when we reach the threshold?
    When any community reaches its 30% target (or minimum 500 premises), we will inform that community that they have reached the next stage of acquiring gigabit broadband! We will start to survey the area, and plan the network based upon the areas where pre-registrations have already been received. We’ll post on Grayshott Gigabit’s social media and our Customer Success team will post in local community groups. Don’t forget you can also spread the good news by telling friends and neighbours you’re going to be joining the gigabit era.
  • 1st Stage - Planning Process?
    Our planning team will commence a desktop study of the area with our mapping tools to determine the high level infrastructure planning for our full fibre network. As builds vary area by area, we have some key factors that we look out for: Existing Infrastructure from Openreach to the premises Private Road/Highways Access & any permits required Requirement to build or install on private land, and requirements for Wayleaves Business requirements in the local areas Civic buildings; Schools, Village Halls, Places of Worship, Surgeries, Libraries and other premises with the need for connections Health & Safety requirements Landlords & Multi Dwelling Unit Information (Flats, Social Housing, Care Homes) Difficulty of access & terrain, Topography of the areas Listed Buildings Any new devlopments being planned as part of council/private developments? Land Topography in case of Fixed Wireless Access Nearby Masts & Line of Sight capabilities for Fixed Wireless Access
  • 2nd Stage - Survey Stage
    Surveying involves a physical check and examination of the actual geography of the areas where we’re planning on building. It’s a crucial part of the building process as it determines cable, and duct routes, cabinet placements, street works and network access (private land) requirements. We also survey the Masts & Line of Sight for FWA builds, using Drones.
  • 3rd Stage - Agreements
    Once we have the surveys complete, we will give an estimation of the project build, as well as any caveats, additional requirements, and non-standard installations. This will help ensure the community gets a transparent view of timelines, and priorities for the build. We reserve the right to change the build priorities dependent on the physical access, and any blockages in the underlying network. With the understanding of the overall plan, we will work with the community to apply for DCMS Gigabit Vouchers if applicable, and seek to get reassurance/commitment from the areas for the build. We may seek additional commitments from the community, and may require deposits, that will be offset against the services as a credit note. Once agreements have been concluded, our aim is to serve complete the build within 6 months, unless otherwise highlighted by the project plan & agreement.
  • To Pole or Not to Pole?
    We also do physical inspection of the Openreach ducts & poles to make sure they are usable. In many of our rural communities, some of the areas have not had any upgrade of the ducts for several years, and so this can cause issues when building a new fibre infrastructure, and so can be a key obstacle we try to recognise asap to prevent any build delays. We may look at areas and decide that new poles may help us to deliver gigabit fibre to areas faster, and so we may consult on new pole builds. To pole any community adds additional costs, and requires site surveys, and potential wayleaves. However, in some areas there may be additional build charges where properties require non-standard installations. Please contact as at info@grayshottgigabit.com, so that we can address this with a site survey to your premise. We will also need to survey locations for our new street cabinets, and to determine the link between our other sites to create a fully redundant network path. The location of each cabinet depends on a number of different factors which include how many properties are being connected and the local geography. Our aim is to locate our cabinets as discretely as possible and we will always seek to engage with the Parish Council in advance to make sure local views are heard. Our cabinets will be placed within Public Highway. In the event that we require to place the cabinet on private land, we will seek a retrospective wayleave.
  • Cabinet Location
    We will also need to survey locations for our new street cabinets, and to determine the link between our other sites to create a fully redundant network path. The location of each cabinet depends on a number of different factors which include how many properties are being connected and the local geography. Our aim is to locate our cabinets as discretely as possible and we will always seek to engage with the Parish Council in advance to make sure local views are heard. Our cabinets will be placed within Public Highway. In the event that we require to place the cabinet on private land, we will seek a retrospective wayleave.
  • Driveways, Access & How you can help?
    Our standard installation is normally 10 metres from the nearest chamber to each premise. If premises have either aerial cable from a pole, or an existing lead-in duct present (either built by Openreach, or built by premise owner), this accelerates our build plans to connect to each premise. We encourage any homeowners installing or planning new driveways to lay ducting at the same time, so that when connecting fibre to your property, there is minimal disruption. If you have electric gates, we may be able to use the same ducts as those electrical wires if they run to your premise, as fibre optics does not have the same interference properties as copper cables. Where possible, we may utilise existing duct lead-ins for certain properties if the fibre is able to pass through those ducts. When looking to install on private property, Grayshott Gigabit require the owner’s consent before any work can be carried out. If you own your property freehold you can give us the permission we require in the form of a signed wayleave. In some cases, we may ask owners to contact our local approved tradesmen to carry out the ducting/lead-ins within the boundaries of the premises. In such instances, discussions will take place after a site survey, whereby we will inform you of the choices available.
  • MDU's (Flats, Apartments & Maisonettes)
    If you live in an apartment or MDU (Multiple Dwelling Unit) in Hindhead, we may need to gain written permission from your landlord or block management company in advance and before any work commences to connect the building and apartments to our full fibre broadband service. Please forward the QR code to your landlord/block management company, so that they can help us by filling in their details. Alternatively, please send us their details at info@grayshottgigabit.com , and we will contact them directly. Once we have this information, Grayshott Gigabit can then apply for permission to connect the building with our full fibre thus preventing any delays being connected to our GigaFAST broadband services. Please make sure that you have pre-registered for connection on our website, so that we can let the management/landlords know that tenants/home owners are already requesting services. Please also let your neighbours know so that we can connect as many premise owners at the same time, thereby ensuring priority for your building.
  • What does GigaFAST mean?
    We will offer up to 1,000 Megabits (1 Gigabit) per second symmetric service (same speeds upload and download). Most suppliers only offer residential customers an asymmetric service (fast download and much slower upload). Other suppliers’ symmetric services tend to be expensive and available only to businesses.
  • How fast is 1Gig?
    Most BT broadband lines run over copper cable and can provide around a 50Mb connection. The further you are from the Green Cabinet, where the fibre terminates the slower your connection will be. With a pure fibre network Grayshott Gigabit provides up to a full 1,000 Mb or more connection. That’s more than 20 times faster than a good BT connection.
  • What does bandwidth mean?
    Your bandwidth is the amount of data that could simultaneously flow through your connection. While many often call this speed, it may be better described as the width of a road. Mobile devices make practical use of around 5mb/s while a 4K video stream will typically take 15mb/s.
  • What is the Grayshott Gigabit Speed Guarantee?
    Grayshott Gigabit offers simple, guaranteed, exceptionally fast broadband speeds. We will supply the connection speed that you have purchased. We have designed our network so that all customers can get these speeds, regardless of how many premises are using the network at the same time. The large majority of our customers receive this full speed, measured in Mbit/s, at any time of the day, any day of the week. We guarantee to deliver this speed to your Service Demarcation Point within a 10% tolerance. Your actual throughput is dependent on your devices, and some of your speed will be used for the normal internet overheads – these are the control and signaling data and protocols that are needed for operating your connection to the internet.
